The MP-44

Designed in Nazi Germany by Mauser and released for combat service in late 1943 under the designation MP-43 and later MP-44 to fill the duel role of machine pistol and medium range rifle. It was found that soldiers rarely engage beyond 300 meters so with the introduction of a smaller 7.92x33 mm round the first all Assault rifle was born.
